Dating from 1548, this multi-roomed Dales free house has stone-flagged floors, oak beams and gas lighting. The main bar features an original Yorkshire range, usually lit, whilst the cosy tap room has 'Ring the Bull' and an open fire. A snug behind the bar leads to the cruck-barn added in 2006 using traditional techniques with its minstrels' gallery and large open fireplace, this is available to hire for functions such as wedding receptions and the like. Photos and information describe the construction of the barn.

The guest beers (usually 2) usually come from Yorkshire breweries. A further pump switches between Theakston Best Bitter and LAMB Brewery beers. Old Speckled Hen. The Old Peculier is served from wooden casks, which the owner takes to Masham every fortnight for filling.

Occasional music and other events take place in the Cruck Barn - check out the ferret racing in February and the Craven Arms beer festival in mid-October. Accommodation is in 3 Shepherd's huts behind the pub. The bus (Monday, Wednesday and Friday day-time only, very limited service) stops outside.

Restoration

Dating from 1548 and starting life as a farmhouse, the building slowly evolved into a pub as the farmers started selling ale in addition. This multi-roomed free house has been totally restored following jarring modernisation by previous owners. The interior is now in keeping with the building itself as a result of drastic changes, such as an internal wall that had to be rebuilt and the servery and open fires returned to their positions. Everything has been extremely well done to create a pub a pub of great character. The pub has stone-flagged floors, oak beams and gas lighting. The main bar features an original Yorkshire range, usually lit, whilst the cosy tap room has 'Ring the Bull' and an open fire. A snug behind the bar leads to the cruck-barn that was added in 2006 using traditional techniques so that it looks authentically old. Originally these barns were used to house livestock and store animal feed and there are few left. It is complete with heather-thatched roof and soaring oak trusswork, a minstrels' gallery and a large open fireplace. It is used for events and you can ask at the bar to view if it is not being used.
