The most traditional pub remaining in the town centre, and ideally situated as a refuge from the bustle of the High Street and the Glades Shopping Centre. Most of the pub is wooden-floored but there is also a carpeted area with ageing but comfortable seating. Smokers will appreciate the partly covered courtyard at the rear. There is no regular beer, but the range usually includes at least one beer from Brains, Westerham or Adnams.

Historic Interest

Originally called the "Three Compasses", this former public house has changed names several times since the 1970s becoming an "Arkwright's Wheel" and then a "Scruffy Murphy's". The last name of the "Compass" is believed to have dated from 2008 and maybe attributed to the nearby streets being named North, South, East and West or the masonic symbol representing self-restraint.

The original timber building dated from the early 1830s and was located in what was later called the Cage Field Triangle, named after the former Cage Field before it was built upon (the cage being used to house offenders for the nearby magistrates court).

The pub was rebuilt in 1911 in the decorative "Arts & Crafts" style. When this was converted into the current Franco Manca restaurant, a full restoration was carried out which revealed the original jade green tilework at the base.
