A striking 17th century sandstone one-time local now gastropub with black and white paneling and large ornate brick chimney. That exterior belies a highly modernised interior fitted out with sofas, high tables and more formal dining areas around a central bar. Minimalist artwork decorates the walls. A large canopy protects the outdoor drinking/eating area.

Prior to 2005, this was very much a locals' pub featuring an inglenook fireplace and high back settles. Traditionalists, as with many pubs, will consider it a shame all that rustic character has been completely lost but times move on.

The pub derives its name from the cock horses that were hired out to provide extra pulling power over the local hills. It is said that Oliver Cromwell took shelter here as the civil war approached Chester.
