This is a club, which means that the bar may be only open to members.

Founded in 1863 for those with a professional or amateur relationship with the Arts. The first chairman was the author of Tom Brown's Schooldays, Thomas Hughes. Dickens, Du Maurier, Whistler, Rossetti and Swinburne have all been members. The site suffered a direct bomb hit in 1940 but has since recovered. Current membership has broadened to include the worlds of art, architecture, fashion, film, literature, music, performance, photography, science, theatre and media. As might be expected, the Club has a very good collection of art!

Above the Club is the Arts Club Hotel with 16 rooms and suites.

In 2016, the freehold of The Arts Club was sold for £90m to an unnamed European family. The club has a lease to occupy until around 2050.
