This pub, on the Bowes-Lyon estate, has been serving drinkers since 1882. It offers a constantly changing list of guest beers, sometimes featuring the more obscure breweries. Following the retirement of long standing landlord, Danny Blackmore, in June 2025, the pub has been tastefully refurbished and continues to offer a good section of real ales. This rurally located pub is popular with walkers and cyclists. There are plans to offer food and Sunday roasts going forward.

The Charter Market Quarter has many historical links. One of the only free-standing medieval civic clock towers, the site of the First Battle of St. Albans in 1455, during the Wars of the Roses. Allegedly the Boot Inn played host to soldiers fighting in the battle. There used to be 23 pubs around the Market area!
