Historic Interest
Historically listed as a commercial inn & posting house - in 1912 it was also listed with a motor garage. The 1904 Woodbridge licensing records show that the Crown & Castle's license was issued in 1700. A paperback book published in 1969, called "Inns of the Suffolk Coast" by Leonard P Thompson** contains the following extract: Built in 1879 on the site of its predecessor & modernised in 1939. Robert Cooper, proprietor of the Orford Hotel, closed that establishment in the late 1830's & moved to The Crown & Castle. In 1969, this was a Trust House Hotel. Although the pub dates back to the 16th cent. it was much rebuilt in 1896. Located within sight of Orford Castle. Owned until late-2019/early-2020 by Ruth and David Watson.
