Orwell Hotel, Felixstowe

The 1904 Woodbridge licensing records show that the Orwell's license was issued in 1898. In 1922 listed at Undercliff rd West A paperback book published in 1969, called "Inns of the Suffolk Coast" by Leonard P Thompson** contains the following extract: Only partly finished at the end of May, 1898, it was open for business on 1st July on the day the town station opened & a celebratory luncheon was held here. The Orwell, like the Felix, was designed & built by Mr Tollemache, in "Helmingham style". It was run in it's early days by Carl Rosinky. In 1966, it underwent a great transformation after it was acquired by Mr Alex Taylor & Mr Charles McCoy, both well-known East Anglian hoteliers. Work began in May & by December, 1966, it had been rebuilt from cellar to roof, the exterior remaining virtually unchanged. In 1969, Orwell Hotel (Felixstowe) Limited, of which Mr McCoy had been managing director since 1966, merged with Queens Modern Hotels Limited, with Mr McCoy continuing in the same role.
