Open and licensed daily from 10am, this quirky bar housed in a 15th Century former almshouse close to the market square, serves an ever-changing selection of real ales from national and Yorkshire breweries. There are also eight keg lines and a wide selection of cans and bottles. Deceptively larger inside than it appears from the outside, there is a step down from bar level to a mix of café type seating and armchairs around a wood-burning-style stove. There is a mezzanine level with a smaller room upstairs to one side, and an enclosed courtyard at the rear providing pleasant outdoor space too. A varied menu of small and large plates, lunch and tapas, with roasts on Sundays; homemade specials change regularly. The pub hosts regular events, including a quiz on Wednesdays.
