Historic Interest

Also known as the Geordie Club, because of the number of Northumberland miners who came to work the Calverton Pit. Surface layout of the colliery designed by Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1935. An estimate of proposed output was that the mine should yield 100 million tonnes of coal, employing men for over "125 years". Number 1 shaft - First sod cut by Captain C.B. Lancaster and Sir Hugh Seely in 1937. (www.calvertonvillage.com).
