One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

The building has recently been both a shop and a restaurant and is now returned to full pub use under its original name. It is largely modernised but remnants of old tiling exist. The tiled mural on the right hand wall is magnificent. It colourfully depicts the trial of Catherine of Aragon as portrayed in Shakespeare’s play Henry VIII. The trial took place in 1529 in Blackfriars, at which Henry VIII sought to annul his marriage. The tiling is by WB Simpson & Sons and is thought to have been installed in 1875 as part of the pub’s Victorian refit. The scene is surrounded by several decorative borders and to the right is a glazed panel that describes the scene and principal characters..
