  • Historic Interior

A classic Scottish bar in a listed building with dark wooden interior, fine bar gantry and stained/leaded glass windows. It was tastefully refurbished in 2022 by DM Stewart, who also own the Abbotsford, Cumberland Bar and Guildford Arms. Popular with a varied clientele from the local community and those using the adjacent Haymarket station. A screen above the bar shows the departures board. Very busy when Heart of Midlothian are at home. An upstairs lounge is now a cocktail bar and there is a bar annexe down two steps. Meals, with a traditional Scottish pub fayre theme, are served all day. Children are not admitted.

Two star - A pub interior of very special national historic interest

Listed status: B

This busy pub with its splendid wooden frontage occupies two buildings and was redesigned by Robert MacFarlane Cameron in 1906 for Messrs Ryrie and Company, whisky merchants.

Entrance doors on the left both have ‘Bar’ leaded panels in them, suggesting that the single bar space may have been like this for a very long time. The good, spreading gantry with a still-working clock over the centre is unaltered. The original bar counter formerly curved around on the right but was shortened in 1992 to improve staff access and some panelling was re-sited. There are still working water taps on the bar that were replaced in the 1980s and some attractive coloured glass advertising various drinks. The right-hand section houses a small sitting room popular with diners. Upstairs is a modern lounge with a ‘Sitting Room’ window.
