This vibrant inn was formerly the Plumbers Arms, renamed after a legendary local smuggler, and is situated in the historic town centre near the Priory Church and Castle. Continuing the theme it features paintings of locals throughout the smuggling era. It is rugby union-oriented and supports East Dorset RFC. Great bar food is available lunchtimes and evenings with speciality fish dishes served in the adjoining shack. The large paved patio area with sheltered alcoves is a must in the summer. Live music plays several nights per week.

It has been reported in November 2024 that the Thomas Tripp is serving keg beer through a handpump. The clip is labelled as 'Brewery Conditioned'; that is keg beer, it is designed to be colder and gassier than cask conditioned ale. This is the third handpump from the left - see photo - Please do not submit beer scores or 'spot a beer' for this pump.
