Grade I listed 16th century inn with many original features including 3 large fireplaces. King Richard III is known to have stayed during his exploits in the area. Fully refurbished in 2020. Sells a range of beers from local breweries plus Loweswater Gold from Cumbrian Legendary Ales. Opening times for the pub and meals change weekly and are posted online.

Closed 8.2.15 Changed name 21.12.15 reopened 28.7.16. Closed 3.9.22 to 22.3.24 Roger Owen Humphries owner from 2015 and DPS. Reopened 24.2.20 with Adrian Dudson manager to February 2021

Conversion

This is a magnificent place that is Grade I-listed. It has been an inn since early C18. The ambience comes from its time as a grand house for the gentry and it is said that King Richard III stayed here. Original features include three large fireplaces and extensive wood panelling . There are two bars with counters that are probably inter-war since when the pub has been refurbished.
