This pub is rather hidden away on what was formerly the main road from Chislehurst to Sidcup, but is now a quiet residential street It is very close to an entrance to Scadbury Park, and so is popular with walkers. The subsequent alterations and extensions include a conservatory built in the 1980s. Although the pub has a focus on food, casual drinkers are also welcome. The pub is carpeted throughout with historical photos adorning the walls and has a good website.

Historic Interest

Originally called the White Swan and then just the Swan, the building dates from 18th C and served the hamlet of Perry Street, which was detached from Chislehurst village as a separate community (with name likely derived from local pear orchards). Renamed in 1859 in honour of John Townshend, 3rd Viscount Sydney, who was appointed Lord Chamberlain that same year. Later becoming 1st Earl Sydney in 1874, he was also Lord of the Manor of Scadbury & Frognal which covered the local area. The pub was later owned by the Dartford Brewery. Located on the old main road between Chislehurst and Sidcup, this was bypassed in 1956. In the 1970s and 80s, the boxer Henry Cooper was a regular here with his trophy belts on display.
