  • Historic Interior

A memorial to Polish Spitfire crews operating from the nearby wartime airfield at Chailey stands in the car park of this family-run Harvey's pub. Both bars are warmed by open fires in winter, and bar billiards and darts can be played. Quality meals from an extensive menu are available in the restaurant area or in the large beer garden during the summer. Children and dogs are welcome. The 166 bus stops right outside the pub.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: Not listed

Built in 1956 in 1930s chalet style to replace the original pub which was demolished during World War II the war to make way for RAF Chailey airfield and until alterations in 2003 it was completely intact. The public bar still has its parquet floor, original and distinctive counter front (new top), brick fireplace and some dado panelling but all that remains of the bar back is the cabinet work. Originally beer was served directly from casks. A pity about the overpowering addition of a pot shelf.

General information about historic pub interiors

Dating from 1956, this pub retains two bars.  The public bar has its original counter and parquet floor; the left hand bar is an amalgamation of two rooms, with parts of the bar back surviving, although the position of the counter has changed.  Surviving fittings include fireplaces, dado panelling, and bench seating.Built in 1956 in 1930s chalet style with Crittal windows to replace the original pub which was demolished in the war to make way for RAF Chailey airfield ( RAF Chailey memorial is located in the pub grounds to the north east corner) and until 2003 it was completely intact. The public bar is virtually unaltered with its parquet floor, original and distinctive bar counter front (new top), 1950s brick fireplace and some dado panelling but all that remains of the bar back is the cabinet work - originally it did have beer served from cask ends and a mural. It is a pity about the overpowering addition of a pot shelf.

The left hand bar is a conversion of two rooms in 2003 when one third of the bar back was removed to create a gap into the rear dining room and the majority of the original bar counter turned through 90%; the bar top is new. Both areas retain their original brick fireplaces, parquet floor in the front area remains but new tiles added to cover the former servery area and added over the parquet floor in the rear area. Dado panelling in the rear area has been painted and original gents retained. There is a distinct original bench in both the right hand bar and the rear area of the left hand bar.
