An outlet for the town centre scene, mainly serving 18 to 30 year age group. The low-ceilinged front area has an L-shaped layout, split up by low screens and small changes of level. The décor is predominantly dark grey but offset on two walls by narrow wooden slats and on one wall by vivid floral wallpaper. Steps at the back lead down to the 'Student Area' which has a pool table and more of a public bar feel. This in turn accesses 'The Yard' which is semi-open to the street and occupies a former hairdresser's premises. After a period when real ale availability was variable, two changing and generally interesting beers can be expected.Live local music every Wednesday.

Historic Interest

A large Grade II listed building dating from the late 18th century and originally called the White Bear when occupying just 11 Church Street. It was renamed the Royal Hotel in 1835 after the then Princess Victoria stayed the night, hence the royal arms on the side gable. In 1893, it extended into nos 7 & 9. In the late 1990s, it became the Fealty & Firkin for about five years and then the Assembly for a further five years before reverting to its original name.
