Large stone building opposite the bus station which was very well refurbished in late 2022. Overlooking the bar is a split-level drinking area with large screen TVs showing music and live sport. A popular darts board is situated to the far end of the front of the pub with a pool table round the corner.. A plush drinking area to the rear is brightly lit and welcoming; if features highly attractive wallpaper and framed photos of old Barnsley. The building was once the Barnsley Court House Railway Station and from 1999-2003, was Wetherspppon's first pub in the town. Real ale availablity has been patchy in the past though, recently, three pumps were in operation; however, new management has (probably sensibly) reduced these to one, an impressively tall example dispensing cask Wainwright Gold.

Historic Interest

This stately building was constructed as a courthouse in 1868, only to be sold two years later to the Midland Railway to serve as a station on their new line through the town. It continued in this role until 1960 with trains heading for Penistone in one direction and Sheffield, Doncaster and Cudworth in the other. The station then closed with all services being concentrated on the current station. Various uses followed - a dancing school, a ballroom and the Comedy Store pub before, in 1999, it was bought by Wetherspoons. They moved to larger premises in 2003 since when it has had various owners, currently Punch Taverns.
