Brewing enigma dies

The death of Humphrey Smith at the age of 81 sees the passing of the controversial owner of Samuel Smith’s brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. He leaves a legacy of closed and shuttered pubs, and often appalling treatment of both his publicans and customers. But he had a strong belief in traditional brewing methods that included the Yorkshire square fermenting system. Resident coopers built and repaired oak casks while local deliveries were made by horse-drawn drays.
